Hello Monday - Heart Month

Did you know that February is American Heart Month? While many people will turn their attention to Valentine’s Day, this month can be a good reminder to stop and think about your heart health.

Your heart is so important to your body and is vital for survival. I am taking time this month to evaluate my heart health and find ways to improve it. Here are some ideas on how you can improve your heart health:

Exercise

According to health experts, it is important to get at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise at least five days a week (or 150 per week). This can include anything from running, swimming, playing and active sport, or even just brisk walking. The important thing is to get your heart pumping.

Diet

The saying “You are what you eat” is so true. A well balanced diet is important to keeping your heart healthy. I struggle with this often. When life gets crazy it’s easy to search out something at a fast food restaurant such as a burger, pizza, fried chicken, etc.  A lot of these foods are packed high in sodium, fat, and cholesterol. You can greatly improve your diet by trading out those food items with foods such as leafy greens, fish, lean meats, certain nuts, berries, whole grains and such.

Sleep

It’s crucial for your body to get enough sleep. I think we can all attest to the fact that we don’t feel well when we don’t get enough sleep. Experts say we should be getting at least 6 – 8 hours of sleep.

Just a few of these changes can help you heart health immensely. Don't stress out about making all of these changes at once and doing them perfectly. Pick one thing to improve and you can add more as you become more comfortable with it.
